is a 320 acre lake on Wentworth Springs Road east
of Georgetown via Highway 193. It has 40 developed
camp sites and a boat ramp. Boating is restricted
to 5 miles per hour. Don’t forget to see the
Marshall Gold Discovery State historic park 8913

There are many sports and activities
to participate in, in the area:
Horseback riding, hiking, biking, running,
fishing, tennis, rafting, golf, flying airplanes,
quads and four wheeling are popular here.
Just a short drive away is the Tahoe
area for more recreational opportunities.
All of the Georgetown Divide areas
are an excellent place to raise a family, retire,
breath clean air, or just escape from the city.
Auburn Lake Trails is one
of the most active planned communities. Here residents
enjoy riding and hiking trails that access the
Western State trail, tennis courts, a nine
hole golf course, swimming pool, library, equestrian
center with barn, stables pasture, and lighted arena
with grandstands, tot’s playground, recreation lake
and beach with restrooms, playing field, volleyball,
basketball, and campground.
Greenstone is another quality
development with trails, tennis and swimming closer
to Placerville.
The Georgetown Divide area has a
small airport right out of Georgetown.
The elevation of the area is from
around 700 feet around Coloma, about 1000 up to
2100 in Cool, about 1500 to 2200 in Greenwood
about 1200 to 2900 in Garden Valley up to near 4000
feet near Stumpy Meadows. The climate zone
is great for gardening. Logically, El Dorado
County is home to many premium vineyards
and over 20 wineries. Twenty five to 30
grape varieties are grown here, from Chardonnay
to Zinfandel. Call 800-306-3956 for more information.
Being in general “below the snow,
and above the fog” The divide area can be one of
the warmest areas in the Nation at times.
However, we also enjoy the occasional surprise snow
which can last in the upper elevations long enough
to make a snow man and see how long he lasts!
There are Public and Private schools
in the area. The Black Oak Mine Unified
School District has averaged 2100 students in seven
schools. Northside in Cool, K-8, Creekside
in Garden Valley, K-5, Otter Creek in Volcanoville,
K-5, Divide High is a continuation school adjacent
to Golden Sierra High which is a comprehensive high
school grades 9-12 in Garden Valley. Cool
Christian School, established in 1990, provides
a traditional academic program with a Christian
emphasis for students in kindergarten through 8th
grade. Independent study or home school is
offered through the Black Oak Mine district as well.
For more information on schools please call 530-333-8300.
The Georgetown Divide Recreation
District (GDRD) formed in 1990 provides and
enhances recreation opportunities. The GDRD
serves a 472 mile area and includes the communities
of Cool, Greenwood, Pilot hill, Kelsey, Georgetown,
and Garden Valley. Call to find out more about
the many classes and programs: 530-333-4000.
The Recreational district has received a grant to
add a community facility in Greenwood. Plans
include a park, tennis, pool, and skateboard facility
as well as equestrian arena. We all are anxious
to see what really is implemented for our community
there!
While enjoying the country lifestyle,
residents of the area are still close enough to
Major shopping and economic centers nearby including
The Auburn, Roseville, and Placerville areas.
The State Capital only an hour away, Tahoe only
an hour plus away, and the Coast and City San Francisco
roughly 2.5 to 3 hours away.
Growing Business Area
The Cool , Georgetown
Divide areas offer basic services that are growing!
One small supermarket in Georgetown, and a brand
new Holiday Supermarket in Cool! (Just

as Karen O'Brien writes this! The new Supermarket
center promises to hold host to many more businesses,
and the bank plans to move to a new facility.
Pick up a copy of the GEORGETOWN
GAZZETTE to find out about the up-coming events
and community organizations. There really
